Buildkite launched in September 2013 to give software development teams an easier way to self-host their continuous integration tooling. At the beginning of 2013, Keith was working for a company as a technical lead. He had been given a task to move away from their cloud-based CI solution due to security concerns. He investigated a few self-hosted options, but the ones he found were either abandoned, too expensive, or bloated. Keith wondered “Why can’t the UI be hosted, and the build workers belong to the customer?” After nine months and many Redbull-fuelled late nights, Buildkite launched, and ever since has been working closely with software development teams to provide the easiest, most powerful, and flexible system for building and shipping software.
