EnableDoc is a privately held American company that provides physician practices and other health care providers with practice management and electronic health record (EHR) technology, including electronic prescribing, care management, and revenue management (PMS) software. EnableDoc was founded in 2009 and is headquartered in McLean, Virginia. This company marks an important change in the historical evolution of the EHR technology, as it is the first to control and introduce its own speech recognition technology. In 2012, a corporate merger of MultiModal an MedQuest created a second such entity.EnableDoc began its operations in 2009. The company strives to solve three fundamental problems that were faced by group practices wanting to deploy an EHR in the period 1985-2010: lack of ease, lack of flexibility, and affordability. The lack of ease is because most of the EHR systems built during this era were designed with a particular specialty in mind, and had certain forms and data formats particular to that. Therefore, the systems did not adapt well from one specialty to another. The system could not be used if the doctor was traveling or not at workplace, because Internet base access was not possible, and if a specific unusual situation needed to be recorded for a certain class of patients, it would be a big ordeal to modify the forms and execute that change. During this period, SAAS business model was picking up. This model has several important advantages, the most important that the customer does not have to maintain the system, and it is less expensive for the provider to maintain the system. EnableDoc chose to use this approach for their EHR and PMS system.The company introduced web-based speech recognition capability in 2011. This was the first time that an EHR company introduced their own in-house speech recognition technology, as in 2011, all other EHR companies used speech recognition technology supplied by other vendors.The company continues to be privately held as of 2012.
