Fantom is an on-line trading cards game aimed at tweens, teens and young adults, merging social media with the traditional schoolyard game and then adding a twist in terms of a virtual and actual rewards system. At one level this is a game, but it is also a marketing vehicle, allowing brands to interact and connect with their audience. Fantom’s business model is “freemium”, offering a basic service for free and charging a premium for advanced features. The “card” collected is a virtual card behind which has been stacked the social media and licensed content. Players buy packs of online cards and trade with each other to complete sets and decks. A rewards culture has been built into the game, with virtual and actual rewards for completing sets and decks.
