Developer of the IBM Home Page Reader, a Netscape browser plug-in that became the most widely used web-to-speech system available, Asakawa was a blind Japanese computer scientist whose work at IBM Research – Tokyo focused on accessibility. She was the recipient of numerous industry and government awards.
