Bio/Description
Named in 2014 as the third U.S. Chief Technology Officer and the first woman to hold that position, Smith served as Assistant to the President under Barack Obama until January 2017, succeeding Todd Park.
Prior to her government role, Smith spent nine years at Google as a vice president leading new business development and early-stage partnerships across the company's global engineering and product teams. She also served as general manager of Google.org and briefly as a vice president at Google[x], where she co-created Solve for X and WomenTechmakers. Earlier in her career, she was CEO of Planet Out and worked as an engineer on early smartphones at General Magic.
Smith founded shift7 and became its CEO. She serves on the boards of MIT and Vital Voices, was a member of the USAID Advisory Committee on Voluntary Aid, and co-founded the Malala Fund.
