Bio/Description

A Silicon Valley pioneer with more than 30 years of entrepreneurial experience, his career began at age 25 when he co-founded Apogee Chemicals Inc. to provide the semiconductor industry with new UHP chemicals and chemical delivery systems. In 1967, at age 28, he founded Applied Materials Inc. Applied Materials creates and commercializes nanomanufacturing technology used in the production of semiconductor (integrated circuit) chips for electronic gear, flat panel displays for computers and televisions, glass coatings for homes and buildings, web (flexible substrate) coatings for industry and photovoltaic solar cells and modules using both thin film and crystalline (wafer or bulk) photovoltaic technology. In 1993, the Applied Materials' Precision 5000 was inducted into the Smithsonian Institution's permanent collection of Information Age technology. During his tenure at Applied, he issued over 20 patents and was the co-recipient of the first SEMI award for ?Outstanding Contributions to the Semiconductor Industry?. Since then he has founded 14 high technology companies, served on the Board of Directors of more than 30 companies, and raised early stage capital of more than $250 million. He also received the NASA award for ?Outstanding Contributions to NASA Technology Commercialization.? Most recently, he served as CEO of TwinStar Systems Inc. in Fremont, California.
