Bio/Description

Founder of Computerworld and the International Data Group (IDG), McGovern built one of the world's largest technology media companies, with subsidiaries in technology publishing, research, event management, and venture capital.

McGovern was born in 1937 in New York City and grew up in Philadelphia. He graduated from MIT in 1959 with a degree in biophysics. While at MIT, he worked with Norbert Wiener, a pioneer in cybernetics, and also served as editor of The Tech, MIT's student newspaper. His early exposure to computing and information theory shaped his career trajectory profoundly.

After graduating, he joined Edmund Berkeley's Computers and Automation magazine as a circulation analyst. This experience gave McGovern deep insight into the nascent technology publishing industry. In 1964, he founded the International Data Corporation (IDC), a market research firm, and in 1967 he launched Computerworld, a weekly newspaper covering the rapidly expanding computer industry. These ventures became the foundation of IDG, which he established as a parent organization to manage his growing portfolio of technology media properties.

Over the following decades, IDG expanded under McGovern's leadership to become one of the world's largest technology media companies, eventually encompassing more than 300 publications in 85 countries. He had a particular passion for emerging markets, pushing IDG into China in 1980, making it one of the first Western media companies to operate there. IDG's venture capital arm, IDG Capital, became a significant force in funding Chinese technology startups.

McGovern was known for his personal management style, which included visiting every IDG office worldwide and personally handing out Christmas bonuses to employees. He believed strongly in decentralization, giving local managers wide latitude to adapt IDG properties to their specific markets. Colleagues described him as a visionary who combined genuine enthusiasm for technology with sharp business instincts.

He donated generously to MIT, and in 2000 the university named its brain research facility the McGovern Institute for Brain Research in his honor. He and his wife Pamela also established the McGovern Foundation to support scientific research. McGovern received numerous industry honors throughout his career, including induction into the Publishing Hall of Fame.

Patrick McGovern died on March 19, 2014, in San Jose, California, at the age of 76. His legacy endured through IDG, which continued to operate as a major force in global technology media and venture capital.
