Shuman Ghosemajumder

Creator of the first real-time collaborative graphic design application, Ghosemajumder is a Canadian technologist, entrepreneur, and author. He was born in Stuttgart, Germany and grew up in London, Ontario, Canada.

In 1996 he earned a B.Sc. degree in Computer Science from the University of Western Ontario, where he attended after receiving a Canada Merit Scholarship Foundation award as one of the top fifteen students in the country. While in university, he was the North American Public Speaking Champion and President of the Canadian University Society for Intercollegiate Debate. Ghosemajumder was also the first student webmaster at Western. He earned an MBA degree from the MIT Sloan School of Management in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Early in his career, he created the first real-time collaborative graphic design application as a software engineer at Groupware. Later he co-founded a software development firm, and has served as a management consultant with McKinsey & Company and IBM. He joined Google in 2003 as one of the early product managers for AdSense, led the launch of Link Units and AdSense for Feeds, and has served as head of global product management for click fraud at Google, responsible for protecting the company's $23 billion pay-per-click AdWords business.

Ghosemajumder led Trust & Safety product initiatives at Google, where he focused on protecting users, advertisers and partners against click fraud and related threats. He received two Google Founders' Awards for significant entrepreneurial accomplishments. He left Google in 2010 to grow TeachAIDS, which he had co-founded and of which he has served as Chairman. TeachAIDS is a nonprofit organization that develops HIV prevention education technology materials, based on an approach invented through research at Stanford University.

In 2012, he joined Shape Security as Vice President of Strategy, a startup backed by Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers and Google Ventures. Shape developed the first botwall, a new class of technology that defends websites and applications against malware, botnets and scripts. Ghosemajumder has engaged with some of the world's largest companies in vertical markets including health care, retail and aerospace to protect against threats which had no security solutions at the time.

He is co-author of "CGI Programming Unleashed" (Macmillan, ISBN 1-57521-151-3, 1997) and a contributing author to "Crimeware" (Symantec Press, ISBN 0-321-50195-0, 2008). His master's thesis proposed the Open Music Model, which predicted the use of music subscription services. In 2011, Ghosemajumder was included on the MIT150 list as one of the top innovators from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He lives in California with his wife, Dr. Piya Sorcar.
