V.Rajaraman is a pioneer in Computer science education in India. He started the first Post grauate programme in computer science in 1973 and an undergraduate programme in 1978 at IIT, Kanpur.He earned a Master's degree in EE from MIT in 1959 and a PhD from the University of Wisconsin, Madison in 1961. He was an assistant professor at the University of Wisconsin during 1961-62 and joined IIT, Kanpur in 1963.He was a visiting Assistant Professor of EECS at the University of California, Berkeley during 1965-66. He has written 23 books in computer science which are widely used in India. In 2012 he wrote a monograph on the History of Computing in India(1955-2010) on the invitation of the IEEE Computer Society History Committee of which he is currently a member. He was awarded Padma Bhushan for contributions to computer science by the President of India in 1998. He is a Fellow of the Indian National Academy of Science, the Indian National Academy of Engineering, and the Computer Society of India.He obtained the life time achievement awards from the Indian National Academy of Engineering and the Computer Society of India. He was given an honorary DSc by the Bengal Engineering and Science University.
