Inkitt is a digital publishing platform based in Berlin and NYC. Inkitt uses a computer algorithm to predict book success based on reader behaviour. It launched in private beta in September 2014 and was launched to the public in February 2015. In June 2015, author Paulo Coelho decided to use the platform to publish his book 'The Manual of the Warrior of Light'. Coelho said that he wanted readers to read his book first, but only to pay for it if they enjoyed what they read. Inkitt’s iPhone app was launched in 2015. Inkitt’s algorithms try to predict a novel's success based on the behaviour of online readers. Inkitt aims to place promising novels under contract and pitch them to A-list publishers, such as, Penguin Random House, Simon & Schuster and HarperCollins. The first book Inkitt selected for publishing is Erin Swan's Bright Star from The Sky Riders series with Tor Books. Inkitt runs contests for writers where the winner gets published. Winners are determined by reader engagement and user votes. In February 2016, Alan Tudyk partnered with Inkitt for a Firefly/Con Man fanfiction writing contest.
