The Israeli Air Force is the air and space arm of the armed forces of the State of Israel. The Israeli Air Force was formed in 1948 shortly after the declaration of independence by the newly formed State of Israel. The air force has played a pivotal role in the defense and survival of the state as it faced wars on several fronts on its borders in the fledgling years of independence and in the years after. The Israeli Air Force has over 34,000 active personnel in its ranks and operates over 700 aircrafts in its fleet. While a majority of its military assets are provided by the United States of America, Israel has also developed its own aircraft such as the Neshr and the Kfir fighters. The Israeli Air Force maintains its headquarters in Tel Aviv.
