This method is particularly novel because of its ability to not trigger an inflammatory response, which other polymer delivery systems can cause, due to its biodegradable nature. These attributes also lend to many advantages in drug delivery, including but not limited to controlled dosage release of drugs, targeted release to particular areas, and assisting in the up-take of the drugs by targeted cells. Though this technology has centered on drugs, the delivery system can carry proteins and nucleic acids as well, which may prove essential in the future with tailored cellular therapy.
