Bio/Description

A researcher in media computing; more specifically in video and image analysis, search and browsing, over the years, he is the Managing Director of Microsoft Advanced Technology Center (ATC), an R&D center working on advanced technologies and software products and services in the areas of web service, mobile, unified communication, gaming, servers, developer tools and serviceability. He is also the Chief Technology Officer (CTO) for Microsoft China Research and Development Group(CRD). He was a founding member; then the Assistant Managing Director, of Microsoft Research Asia (MSRA). MSRA was reported in 2004 as ?The hottest Computer Lab? by MIT Technology Review. While with MSR Asia, he led efforts to research in Media Computing, Data Mining and Web Search, Natural Language Computing, and Distributed Systems. Prior to joining Microsoft, he was with Hewlett-Packard Labs at Palo Alto, California, where he was a Research Manager. He also worked at the Institute of Systems Science (today, renamed I2R), National University of Singapore. He received his B.S. degree in Radio and Electronics, from Zhengzhou University, Henan, China in 1982; and was awarded his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from the Technical University of Denmark, Lyngby, Denmark in 1991. He has authored four books, over 350 scientific papers, and holds 62 US patents. He has been elected Fellow of IEEE and Association for Computing Machinery (ACM). He was awarded the ?2008 Asian American Engineers of the Year? award and is the recipient of 2010 IEEE Computer Society Technical Achievement Awards, for pioneering contributions to Multimedia Content Analysis Systems". He has been the Editor for the Proceedings of IEEE since 2004; the Editor in Chief of IEEE Transaction on Multimedia, from 2004 to 2007; the Associate Editor of IEEE Transaction on Circuits and Systems for Video Technology from 1999 to 2002; a Member of Editorial Board, IEEE Multimedia from 1998 to 2002; Founding Member of Editorial Board, International Journal of Multimedia Tools and Application from 1995 to 1999; and Editor, Journal of Visual Communication and Image Representation from 1997 to 2002. He also served on the ACM SIGMM Executive Board from 2002 to 2004; and was Chair of the ACM Multimedia Conference, Singapore in October 2005. He also Co-Chaired the IEEE Multimedia Conference and Expo, Toronto, Canada in July 2006. He is the author or co-author of several publications the latest of which are: with Dong Liu, Shuicheng Yan, Rongrong Ji, and Xian-Sheng Hua: Image retrieval with query-adaptive hashing.
